Best Swimming Hairstyles

Keeping your hair out of the way whilst swimming can be a challenge, but fear not we’ve got some of the best swimming hairstyles for you to try out on your next pool trip or your day out at the beach. These will help keep your hair in check, whilst also looking fabulously stylish.

Best Swimming Hairstyles

1. Sleek High Bun

This is the best swimming hairstyle for minimal drag whilst you are lapping at the pool. It will help to keep hair compact whilst reducing resistance in water.

How to create this style:

1. Brush your hair back to remove tangles.

2. Gather hair into a high ponytail at the crown of your head.

3. Secure it tightly with a hair tie.

4. Twist the ponytail into a tight spiral.

5. Wrap the twisted hair around the base to form a bun.

6. Secure with another elastic band and a few hairpins for extra hold.

7. Use gel or water to smooth flyaways for a sleek finish.

2. Braided Ponytail

This is one of the best swimming hairstyles for a secure and sporty look. It’ll keep your hair out of your face while still having a ponytail.

How to create this style:

1. Brush and detangle your hair.
2. Divide it into three sections and begin a Dutch braid (crossing the outer strands under the middle, instead of over).
3. As you plait your hair down the back, incorporate small sections of hair from both sides.
4. Continue plaiting all the way to the nape of your neck, and then down to the ends.
5. Tie the end with a hairband.

3. Braided Low Bun

This is a good one if you want a hairstyle to wear under a swim cap. It’s ideal for keeping your hair in check whilst adding a flair of style.

How to create this style:

1. Part your hair on one side and start a French braid along the front hairline.

2. Continue the braid toward the back of your head.

3. Gather the remaining hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck.

4. Twist the ponytail into a low bun and secure it with an elastic band and hair pins.

5. If wearing a swim cap, ensure the bun is tight and compact to fit comfortably underneath.

4. French Plait and Ponytail

This is a good one if you want a beach-ready hairstyle which also offers the practicality of keeping your hair in place all day.

How to create this style:

1. Part your hair on one side and start a French braid along the front hairline.

2. Continue the braid toward the crown of your head.

3. Gather the remaining hair into a high ponytail at the top of your head.
4. Secure the ponytail with a hair band.
5
. Then using a section of the ponytail, wrap this over the hairband and secure it with a hairclip underneath.

5. Double Dutch Braids

This is so stylish for long hair when you just don’t want to wear a ponytail (again!). It keeps your hair tight and evenly spread, which is great for preventing tangling.

How to create this style:

1. Part your hair down the middle into two equal sections.

2. Start on one side and take a small section at the top.

3. Divide it into three strands and begin a Dutch braid (cross the strands under instead of over).

4. Continue adding small sections of hair as you braid down toward the nape.

5. Secure the braid with an elastic band at the end.

6. Repeat the same steps on the other side.

7. For extra flair, plait the two sides towards each other and then cross over at the back of the head.

6. Braided Crown & Bun

This is one to practice but it looks so elegant and actually holds really securely once in place. It’s ideal for those who want both security and a unique style to their hair.

How to create this style:

1. Start by creating a crown braid by braiding a section of hair around your head.

2. Secure the braid with hairclips as you move around the head.

3. Gather the rest of the hair into a low bun at the nape. Leaving a small section to plait underneath.

4. Braid the bottom section of loose hair and tie at at the bottom.

5. Secure with pins for a firm hold.
